This week we are continuing to look at Blue Penguin by Petr Horacek. Can your child remember what happened in the story? Recap by watching the video below.  Afterwards talk about winter with your child. What do they know? Can they tell you what ice/snow looks/feels like?

Talk about what clothing you would wear in winter to keep yourselves warm. Encourage your child to mark make/write, discussing the initial/middle and end sounds in words.

Watch the video below and talk about what the Koala put on to keep warm. Watch the video again and pretend to put on the different items or why not see if you have any of those items to put on. Have fun dressing up!!!

Extension - Read the letter below to your child and afterwards research all about penguins. Where do they live? How long do they live for? etc.

Afterwards your child could write a letter with support back to Blue Penguin explaining what you have found out or you can discuss together what penguins like to do.

I'm feeling very confused and upset. I hope you can help me. The other penguins are saying that I'm not a real penguin. I feel like a penguin because I can dive (although I'm not the best at it) and I can catch fish. I sometimes catch even bigger fish than the other penguins. Can you find out a bit more about penguins for me to see if I am one?.

I'M A PENGUIN! (informational song for kids about penguins)

Explore ice, using any ice cube trays or an old tub that you may find around the house.  You could put some blue food colouring to make it more wintery and if you have any arctic animals or anything else you may think of put them in too and see if they are able to break the object free from the ice, talk to them and ask questions about how the ice melts.
