Promoting Early Reading

Reading is important in Reception...

In Reception at Woodside Academy we value and promote Early reading every day!

We want our children to be ready to read but also have a love of reading. To do this we ensure that the children learn different skills that will allow them to be better readers.

These Early Reading Skills include:

- Playing matching games

-Memory games

-Rhyming games

-Have awareness of Phonics and are taught Phonics daily

-Language development activities which cover; listening, attention, alliteration and sound discrimination

We teach these skills through provision and also through our daily phonics lessons and teach how reading is important through all areas of learning.

Your child will bring home a reading book.  Please read this with your child every night! Make it an enjoyable and important part of your routine. Children are rewarded for reading at home through our Reading Championship.  We will send out further details of this in due course.

We love to read!

Throughout the year we promote reading at school with your child.

We have stay and read sessions, where you and you child get to come back to school on an evening in your pyjamas and we give each child a new book that they can keep and take home, we also have hot chocolate and snacks.

During the session you can enjoy the new book with your child and ask the team any questions that you may about your child's reading skills and how to develop them further.
