Monday - To identify purpose, structure and grammatical features within a non-fiction text and evaluate how effective these are.

Think about your own experiences of using newspapers – Have you read one before? What are they for? What can we read about? How do they look? How are they structured and organised?


Task 1: Take a look at the WAGOLL below. As you read it, think about…

  • How is the text structured?
  • What features can you see?
  • What is the purpose of each feature?
  • What grammatical features have been used? How effective are they?
  • What tense is it written in?


Task 2: Looking at the WAGOLL again, can you find an example of a:

  • Headline         
  • Introduction
  • Pictures with captions
  • Paragraphs
  • 3rd Person
  • Quotes / Direct Speech

Task 3: Copy and fill in the features table, including examples and a reason WHY the feature has been used.







A catchy title to get the reader’s attention and to clearly state what the newspaper is about.

Task 1: Watch the video and then answer the question below:

How do you think everyone was feeling watching? Do you think this was a big deal to mankind?

Task 3: Create a bullet point list or mind map of your own Apollo 11 Moon landing research.

You can use the information included below, or if you have access to the internet, you can research the answers to the questions you asked in task 2.

Friday - To organise and plan my introduction.

An introduction often tries to include a short summary of the whole event. It often answers at least 2 of the 5 W’s in the first section (the bold part) and the rest of the 5 W’s in the second part – where, when, why, what and who. Can you spot these in the introduction WAGOLL below?
