Hello Year 5! We hope you've had a restful weekend and you're ready for some Literacy!

 

Lesson 1 - Learning Objective: To read a non-fiction text and identify purpose, structure and grammatical features

 

 

Task – Read through the WAGOLL paying close attention to the features of the text.

  • What kind of text is this?
  • What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction?

What is the purpose of a non-chronological report is? Discuss with a family member who you think the audience might be.

 

Task: Look at the table below. Focus on finding each of the features on the table – Draw a line from each feature and label.

Lesson 2 - Learning Objective: To use knowledge of structure of text type to find key information

 

In today’s lesson you will be focusing on the text layout and using that to record and retrieve information. As you know, if you want to look for specific information then it is easier to look at the features which will signpost you to the relevant information. For example, if you want to find out information about Newton’s early years, then you only need to focus on the ‘Early Life’ sub heading and there you will find all the information you need to answer that question! Remember to answer in full sentences…I don’t need to remind you about basic punctuation Year 5 because I know you’re fantastic at remembering CAPITAL LETTERS AND FULL STOPS!!

Lesson 3 - To use a dictionary to check meaning of new vocabulary

Along with a parent/carer, let’s play a game! I know how much you used to enjoy Mrs Furnace’s dictionary games so I’ve decided to put you to the test!! You are going to compete in a dictionary race! Let’s see who wins! The winner shouldn’t have to do dry the dishes this evening!
