Welcome to Year 1!
In Year One with strive to teach our learners to develop their independence, resilience and confidence in all aspects of learning and life skills.
Our class teacher in Magpie class is Miss Ahmed and our class teacher in Robin class is Mrs Farrell. We are also very lucky to be supported by Mrs Foster and Miss Joyce.
Children in Year One build on their learning from Early Years through practical tasks, hands on learning and a variety of evidence in their books.
In Year One the subjects we teach are:
- History / Geography (alternated half termly)
- Art / DT (alternated half termly)
We record RE, PSHE and computing in floor books.
We also have a specialist MFL and music teacher who teach in Year One every Tuesday. We also lucky to have a sports coach who works with the children weekly.
At Woodside Academy we firmly believe that broadening the experience of our children is vital for enhancing their learning!
Over the course of the year we like to go on as many trips as we can, to places we may not have been before. We also like to bring experiences into the classroom, such as a visits linked to toys from the past and animals to handle!
Below is an outline of the experiences we have planned for this year.
Walk in the local area.
Toys from the past workshop.
Visit to the local church.
End of year reward trip – Stockheld Park
We are passionate about teaching early reading skills which opens opportunities for children to achieve well in all areas of the curriculum. We follow the Little Wandle scheme for reading and phonics. Each child has a reading book which is matched with their current phonic stage. As well as the book we have been reading during Little Wandle sessions children also select a library book to develop a pleasure of stories. This can be enjoyed as a family at any time of the day.
In class we have daily just listen time. Below are the stories that Year One enjoy during just listen time.
