Year 5 Hedgehog and Mole

Welcome to Year 5!

In Year 5, we teach our learners to be strong, resilient and independent. We always strive to be our best and set a good example to the rest of the school. We learn important life skills that will help us as we transition into Year 6 and beyond.

Our class teacher in Hedgehog class is Mrs Parker.  Our class teacher in Mole class is Miss Roscoe. We are also very lucky to be supported by Mrs Holt and Mrs Edmondson

Children in Year Five build on their learning from KS1 and KS2. It is at this stage of their school journey that they bring together all that they have been taught and showcase their knowledge.

In Year Five, the subjects we teach are:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Maths
  • Science
  • PE (and Kickboxing!)
  • History / Geography (alternated half-termly)
  • Art / DT (alternated half-termly)
  • PSHE
  • Music
  • Computing
  • RE
  • Spanish
  •

We have specialist teachers, who are experts in their subjects, for the following lessons: PE, Spanish and Music. Mr McNulty, Mrs Backhouse teach in Year Five every Thursday.

What are we doing this half term?

Experiences

At Woodside Academy we firmly believe that broadening the experience of our children is vital for enhancing their learning!

Over the course of the year we like to go on as many trips as we can, to places we may not have been before.

Below is an outline of the experiences we have planned for this year:

Autumn

Spring

Summer

Trip to Mahdni Mosque

  • This trip will give children the opportunity to bring our RE curriculum to life, by being able to link this experience to their learning in school.

Trip to Piece Hall (Halifax)

  • Our History unit for the Spring term is focused on the cloth trade in Halifax during the industrial revolution. This trip is a fantastic opportunity for children to take their learning outside the classroom and into a historical environment.

Trip to Eden Camp

  •

As well as school trips, the children will have the opportunity to take part in weekly swimming lessons at Sedbergh Leisure Centre. These lessons will run from the first week of the year until our final week.

In the Summer Term, children will also have the chance to complete Bikeability Level 1&2.

Below are pictures of the Year 5 children taking part in a Science workshop and during a visit from the local firemen.

Reading

We are passionate about teaching reading skills which opens opportunities for children to achieve well in all areas of the curriculum. Each child has a reading book which is matched with their current phonic stage. This can be enjoyed as a family at any time of the day. In reading lessons, we teach from a variety of engaging texts, using the reading content domains as question types:

In class, we have daily Just Listen time. These are the books that we will be reading this year.

Important information:

  • We have PE every Thursday. Please ensure your child has a kit in school, including pumps and that long hair is tied back.
  • Swimming lessons will take place every Monday. Please ensure your child has suitable swimwear and bring with them a towel. Children can also bring a healthy snack (fruit or cereal bar) to have on the way back.
  • Reading books should be taken home daily, along with the yellow reading card for parents/carers to sign alongside the child once they have read.

If you need any support with reading or homework, please let the teacher know.
